Grand Opening of the Cooperativa de Familia de Palomas

Through generous donations from the Southwest Deanery of the Episcopal Church, Diocese of the Rio Grande, the dream of Socorro Palacios and her son Edgar Mendoza  has become a reality.   Many volunteers and about $3,000 in cement blocks, mortar, wiring, 2x4's. sheet rock and doors transformed this once open cement car wash into an enclosed workshop space in Palomas, Chihuahua, Mexico.  Over 50 people attended the grand opening.  The Rev. Judith W. Lethin, Vicar of Columbus blessed the space, and Socorro's family served lunch and cake to all the gathered women, men and children.    The space was dedicated to Socorro's late husband, Daniel Carreon, an ardent community activist and advocate for the people.  We are still needing funds to complete the kitchen, bathroom and garden as well as the solar hot water and shower.  Please see donations page.

The Dick and Edith Haines

Compassion House

Through the generosity of an anonymous donor the Dick and Edith Haines Compassion House was purchased for Our Lady of Las Palomas Hermitage and Retreat Center in December of 2007.

Compassion House will serve as the workshop space for the Palomas Family Cooperative and Mother House for the Fourth Order of Francis and Clare.  Pilgrims can stay in the Poustinia for a reasonable fee, and guided retreats, silent retreats, Bliss Yoga, and spiritual formation classes will be offered.  A lovely old shed in the garden will soon be converted in to a pottery shed and plans are underway to install a desert utility building with dry toilets, solar hot water shower, and solar cooking facilities.

The Rev. Deacon Kris Lethin can be seen here signing the papers as the

the Desert pours coffee.
